August 2026: The update on Demuxed '26 everyone is trying to backchannel for.
Alright, gang, this one’s been a long time coming. Just to make sure we don’t bury the lede here: the traditional Demuxed conference is not happening in 2026. We’ll go into more details below, but instead we’re working with the MoQ Alliance to put together a scrappy, technology-focused event in October. It kinda named itself: Demoqed.
Why
Hopefully at least some of you are curious as to why…and if you aren’t, pretend you are so we feel better.
The big one is… well the AI hype train apparently has a stop at every venue of our size in the Bay. To be fair, we’re at a weird size where our options are fairly limited to begin with, but the options for a Demuxed 26 home were bleak this year.
The venue frustrations just got us thinking more about the event this year and what we wanted to do. We kept coming back to the feeling of 2015, when we were a small gaggle of nerds in a room together talking about the edges of technology. AOM was born in 2015! People were still switching to HTML5! The rest of “the industry” seemed kinda dismissive of the web and open standards, but we just thought it was cool, so we got together without The Suits to talk about it.
12 years in, we decided to take a beat and try and chase that 2015 vibe this year. We’re going to take a step back from the mainstream Demuxed to help support a technology we’re excited about, and think about how we want Demuxed to serve the community next year and beyond.
Demoqed and what’s happening in October
Demuxed Foundation is a part of the MoQ Alliance. Phil and I are personally excited about MoQ, and we’re going to help the alliance organize a half-day event on October 8th in San Francisco at the Alamo Drafthouse. To be clear, it’s not Demuxed-but-smaller, we want it to be its own dorky self. If you’re excited about and building MoQ stuff, we’d love to see you there.
There’s also a lot going on that week. Our friends at Apple are planning another iteration of the HLS Interest Group, and we’re hoping to help organize another FOMS. That week in SF is also Tech Week, so there will be hundreds of events, meetups, round tables, and, I’m quite sure, as much AI Thought Leadership as you could ever dream of.
The (barebones) website, and registration page for DEMOQED is up now, and if you've got an awesome MoQ talk idea to submit, there's a link right there - check it out 👇🏻
Video stuff on the world wide web
🐰 The MediaBunny legend is back with TurboRes. Zig, Typescript, very fast ProRes decoding in the browser (or other JS environments), no hardware acceleration required. Side note, we were all shocked to discover at Demuxed 25 that Vanilagy is not, in fact, an anime character in real life despite the pfp.
🏎️ It takes a special kind of writer to make you laugh out loud while reading about...media-aware network protocols. Kixelated manages to do it every time, though. This time it mostly focuses on why he’s got a Lightning McQueen tattoo on his lower back (true story).
👐 SMPTE opened up free access to their standards.
🚫 Some Redditor did a video ASCII thing. It’s technically very cool. Comments were, predictably, a wide range of people arguing about MIT licensing and what/who “unblockable” means.
🖼️ Everyone loves a good rant about what people are wrong about in video land, here’s one about IDR frames. Most importantly, a wild Derek and his 2017 Demuxed talk appears in this one. Shoutout to the commenter on that video from 10 months ago that hates timestamps.
2️⃣ This is old news now, but still: dav2d. dav1d, but av2. Neat.
🦀 Ever thought to yourself, “boy I wish I could just have the entropy-coding stage of a wavelet codec without digging through everything else?” Yep, everyone has. For sure. DOZENS of us. Someone wrote ~500 lines of dependency-free Rust just for you.
